Bipolar Disorders

Bipolar affective disorder is characterized by alternating mood episodes of depression and hypomania/mania. It is a disabling illness causing significant functional impairment and it increases the risk of suicide. Current research suggests that circadian rhythm may play an important role in the pathogenesis and has implications in early detection, treatment and prevention. Several projects are on-going to investigate the circadian underpinnings in patients with bipolar disorder. Our work will focus on identifying the individual difference in circadian vulnerability and the efficacy of circadian treatment in patients with bipolar disorder.
